Spring has arrived, the blue skies and warmer days are coming. Flowers are blooming in our gardens and parks, the birds are nesting and little lizards and geckos are waking from their winter sleep. And this season our fruiterer brings us fresh and flavourful produce straight from our farmers.
Here’s a guide to the fruit and vegetables you must try while in season.
Asparagus – It’s time to load up on this healthy vegetable while in season. Low in calories and a great source of nutrients filled with fibre, folate and vitamins A, C and K.
Berries – Did you know there are 400 different species of berries?! Most common and now in season are blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Juicy, sweet, sour or tart, now is the tine to load up on berries filled with antioxidants, great for our health!
Broccoli – Do you cook it, or do you eat it raw? A great source of fibre and protein, it’s time to add this vegetable to your stir-fries! Or have it as a side dish, best steamed so it maintains all the nutrients and vitamins.
Chillies – Did you know that the hottest chilli was grown right here in Australia?! Chillies are officially in season so whether you like mild or hot it’s time to add some to your cooking.
Grapefruits – Semisweet, somewhat bitter grapefruit is in season! Low in calories and high in nutrients, add it to your salad, smoothie or squeeze some into your cocktail.
Lemons – Filled with vitamin C, it’s time to commit to lemon water daily this season, sure to keep you hydrated and healthy. Or get baking, we see a lemon tart on the cards!
Mandarins (imperial) – Great fruit to add to the kids’ lunchboxes, large, puffy skin making it easy to peel while mild in flavour and no seeds. It’s a winner!
Potatoes – Who doesn’t like a potato fries?! Great source of potassium and naturally fat free – chop them up and throw them in the air fryer – no regrets!
Rhubarb – Fruit or vegetable? It tastes delicious with a ton of sugar in a compote or jam and even as an accompaniment to roasted meals. However you like your rhubarb, now is the time to add it to your shopping basket.
Spinach – Rich in vitamins and in season across Spring, add it to your salad, lasagna, smoothie or try a spinach pesto… the recipes are endless.
Zucchini – Zucchini spaghetti anyone? Best eaten raw, however most of us enjoy it cooked. Whether you steam, boil, bake, sauté or grill your zucchini, it’s rich in vitamins and minerals so add it to your shopping list.
